NEWARK, Del. – Four Blue Hens reached double figures in a balanced scoring effort as Delaware edged George Washington, 68-65, Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Dylan Painter posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, scoring all but two of his points in the second half, while Kevin Anderson added 13 points and five assists. Ryan Allen contributed 12 points on the night, while Ebby Asamoah chipped in 10 points and Aleks Novakovich had nine.
Jamison Battle and James Bishop each scored a team-high 14 points for the Colonials.
The teams went into the break tied at 37-37, and after they were still knotted early in the second half, Delaware scored nine straight points to go up 60-51 on an Asamoah three-pointer with 11:42 remaining. The Blue Hens were still up six with three minutes on the clock following a Painter dunk, but GW answered with five straight points to pull within 66-65 at the 1:40 mark.
Allen then converted a tough layup in the paint to extend the margin to three, and after an empty possession for each team, Bishop and Maceo Jack each misfired on three-point attempts in the final seconds as Delaware won its second home game of the season.
Martin Ingelsby
"This felt like a conference game, so it gives us a lot to build on, especially on the defensive end. We continued to move the basketball, and Dylan was fabulous in the second half. We wanted to get the ball inside, and he was really efficient. This is a really good team win."
Dylan Painter
"It felt good for us to play a full 40 minutes, which is what we talked about in the locker room. We played hard, and played good defense from start to finish. In the second half I got it going, and credit my teammates for finding me inside."
