NEWARK, Del. – Delaware suffered a tough shooting night as the Blue Hens dropped their final non-conference game of the season to Morgan State, 65-59, Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware shot just 31.4 percent from the floor, including 7 of 29 from three-point range, and connected on 20 of 30 free throw attempts. The Bears shot 40.4 percent from the field, going 7 of 16 from behind the arc and holding a 41-32 rebounding edge.
Ryan Allen led the Blue Hens for the second straight game with a season-high 22 points while going 4 of 6 from behind the arc to move into third place on the UD career three-pointers list. Kevin Anderson finished with 12 points and six assists, while Johnny McCoy established his career-high for the second game in a row by also scoring 12 points.
The Blue Hens trailed by five early in the second half, but scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 35-31 advantage with 16:19 remaining. Anderson converted a layup to tie the game at 41-41 with 12:37 on the clock, but Morgan State answered with the next five points and led the rest of the way.
Delaware scored five consecutive points to pull within a pair at the 3:08 mark, and later cut the margin to 56-55 on Allen's fourth triple of the night with 2:04 on the clock. However the Bears' Troy Baxter, Jr. countered with a jumper and Sherwyn Devonish-Prince added a pair of free throws to help Morgan State hold on for the win.
Martin Ingelsby
"That was a testament to Morgan State, they were the tougher and more physical team tonight. They wanted it more than us. We have some new guys in new roles, and don't have an offensive identity right now. I've got to find ways to get us into a better rhythm. We need to improve in all facets of the game, and get back to basics and fundamentals. We need to get back to practice and figure some things out."
