The catcher is responsible for the Delaware offense to open the weekend
Â
"We once again played some good innings of baseball tonight, but just not enough to win against a good team like Gardner-Webb," said head coach Jim Sherman. "The guys are in a good place though and realize it's time to start to perform."
The Blue Hens found themselves down 7-0 entering the sixth inning before Goan's solo home run put the visitors on the board. He made things interesting in the eighth after senior Kyle Baker's single and sophomore Joseph Carpenter was hit by a pitch, Goan launched his second of the night for his first career multi-homer game.
Â
Goan was 2-for-4 with four RBIs while senior Vinny Vaccone collected a pair of hits himself out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 as well.
"Jack and Vinny gave us a spark tonight," Sherman said. "Those guys are competing and we need that to work its way through the rest of our lineup."
Â
Delaware's starter was junior Chris Ludman who had a season-high seven strikeouts in just 4.2 innings of work. However, he surrendered seven runs on five hits
Â
The Blue Hens turn their attention to a pair of games with North Carolina A&T on the campus of Gardner-Webb with Saturday's first pitch set for 1 p.m. and Sunday's for 10 a.m.
