Silan’s Strong Start Gives Blue Hens First Win of 2020

Silan goes 7.2 innings and Goan has second straight multi-RBI game
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Sophomore Joey Silan was dominant in his second start of the season and senior Jack Goan stayed hot to life the Delaware baseball team to its first win of the year over North Carolina A&T, 4-1, at John Henry Moss Stadium.
"Great effort by Joey Silan, he was the definition of a true pitcher today," said head coach Jim Sherman. "He moved the ball in and out and had all of his pitchers working and it was nice to get Wakeley a save."
The Blue Hens never trailed, plating two runs in the first inning when Goan singled home graduate student Kyle Baker and freshman Aidan Riley singled home sophomore Joseph Carpenter.
Silan retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, including six in-a-row to open the game in his 7.2 innings. He scattered four hits, with a pair of strikeouts and just one walk while the only run was earned.
That lone Aggie run came in the fourth which made it a 2-1 game at the time. Silan was replaced by senior Derek Wakeley with a runner on and had no problems striking out the final batter of the eighth.
Delaware would eventually get some insurance in the ninth when Goan once again drove home Baker. Riley would hit into a double play, but Carpenter would score on the twin-killing.
Wakeley would retire North Carolina A&T in order in the home half of the ninth, striking out the final batter of the game looking for his first save of the season.
Goan and Riley were each 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs each while junior Jordan Hutchins also had a 2-for-4 afternoon. Freshman Joey Loynd made his first career start and also was 2-for-4.
The Blue Hens and Aggies will meet once more Sunday with first pitch coming at 10 a.m. at John Henry Moss Stadium on the campus of Gardner-Webb.
