Nieves Fires 67, Leads Field Following First Day of Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Blue Hen sophomore Roberto Nieves fired a blistering 67 and holds the individual lead following Saturday's opening round of the Loyola Intercollegiate.
Nieves carded six birdies during his round, three each on the front nine and back nine, while recording just one bogey on the par 72, 7,015-yard course at Palm Valley Golf Club to finish the day at five under par. He holds a one-shot lead over Evan Brown of Loyola and Lucas Scherf of Drake.
Matt Pulgini posted three birdies against just one bogey during his two under par 70 round, ending the day in a tie for fifth place.
RJ Wren, playing as an individual, is tied for 77th place at the tournament with a five over par 77, while Hugo Kedzlie is tied for 90th place with a six over par 78. Jack Melville is tied for 102nd place with an eight over par 80, while Michal Bargenda is tied for 108th place with a 10 over par 82.
Delaware fired a 295 team score on Saturday and sits in 10th place out of 19 squads.
The second round of the three-day tournament will begin at 7:45 local time on Sunday.
