Delaware’s top hitters from last two seasons are players to watch in 2020
RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association released the 2020 edition of the Preseason All-CAA baseball team Wednesday with a pair of Blue Hens earning nods in graduate student Kyle Baker and sophomore Joseph Carpenter.
Â
Baker led the CAA in 2018 with a .354 batting average while driving in 39 RBIs as a junior, but only played in the season opener last year where he sustained an injury that would sideline him for the rest of the campaign. The Hockessin, Delaware native was an All-CAA First Teamer in 2018 and earned his second consecutive Preseason All-CAA selection.
Â
The reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, Carpenter hit a team-best .300 as a freshman and put together a 24-game hit streak in the heart of the season. An everyday starter at first base for Delaware, he reached base in 42 of the final 43 games in 2019. The Cornwall, Pennsylvania native was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.
Â
A trio of Blue Hens received honorable mentions in senior Derek Wakeley, redshirt junior Jordan Hutchins and redshirt sophomore Billy Sullivan IV.
Â
Delaware opens the season with a three-game set at Florida Atlantic, beginning Feb. 14 in Boca Raton, Florida at 6:30 p.m. The home opener is slated for Feb. 28 when UMass Lowell makes the trip to the First State.
