Lesher the hero in the series finale
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball team earned its first series win of the season in thrilling fashion Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium, defeating UMass Lowell twice, capped off by sophomore Zach Lesher's walk-off single to complete the weekend.
"This is what a good college baseball series looks like," said head coach Jim Sherman. "Both sides had strong pitching and solid at-bats. I thought our bullpen was phenomenal all weekend long and I couldn't be prouder for Zach Lesher."
GAME ONE
It was all Blue Hens to start the afternoon behind a 3-for-3 day from freshman Aidan Riley, including a pair of bunt singles, a double and two RBIs.
UMass Lowell plated one in the first and jumped out to a 2-0 lead heading into the home half of the second before Delaware erupted for three runs. Freshman Joey Loynd doubled home junior Jordan Hutchins, a senior Vinny Vaccone single scored Loynd and sophomore Tyler Juhl was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score sophomore Joseph Carpenter.
Vaccone had a 3-for-4 day out of the leadoff spot with two RBIs while Loynd was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Juhl had three RBIs, as part of a 1-for-2 game.
Sophomore Joey Silan had a strong outing, scattering eight hits in five innings, with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Junior Winston Allen worked a clean sixth before senior Derek Wakeley closed things out in the seventh.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, Delaware fell behind early, 3-0, before answering in the fourth inning with a Hutchins infield hit to score graduate student Kyle Baker before a passed ball helped plate Carpenter.
In the fifth, the Blue Hens pieced together a run again to tie things up, when senior Jack Goan's sacrifice fly scored junior John Marti to make it 3-3 through five.
The bullpen trio of freshman Bryce Greenly, junior Chris Ludman, and Wakeley, was nearly untouchable. Greenly worked 2.1 innings with five punchouts, Ludman tossed 3.0 strong with a pair of strikeouts, and Wakeley allowed a hit and struck out one in the 10th inning to combine for 6.1 scoreless innings and stranded 10 River Hawks on the base paths.
That set the table for a Carpenter single up the middle before advancing on a passed ball. Freshman Jorden Jurkiewicz pinch ran before Hutchins was intentionally walked to bring Lesher to the plate with two on. The Newark native singled through the right side to score Jurkiewicz and win the game.
Hutchins was 2-for-4 in the finale while Vaccone picked up his 100th career hit on the night in the Blue and Gold. Carpenter also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a run.
The Blue Hens will face their first midweeks of the year, hosting Maryland Eastern Shore at Bob Hannah Stadium Tuesday before traveling to Maryland for a matchup with the Big Ten foe Wednesday.
