Both Goan and Loynd homer twice in the win
NEWARK, Del. – Senior Jack Goan and freshman Joey Loynd would not be outdone by one another Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, each going deep twice to lift the Delaware baseball team over in-state foe Delaware State, 9-5.
Â
"I thought our guys responded well to a quick turnaround and playing a midweek," said head coach Jim Sherman. "We were able to get a strong start out of Harris and piece it together on the back end with Wakeley. I'm excited about the way we're swinging the bats right now, especially out of Goan and Loynd tonight."
Â
Loynd hit his first career homer in the third inning, a no-doubter to left field to put the Blue Hens in front. The duo then went back-to-back in the fourth inning when Goan skied one to right center and Loynd again cleared the left-field wall to make it 4-1 Delaware.
Sophomore Austin Colmery kept the fourth inning going with a base hit to score junior John Marti to extend the lead to 5-1.
Â
The Hornets would respond in the top of fifth with a run, but freshman starter Evan Harris would limit the damage and work a career-long 5.0 innings.
Â
Delaware State would plate three runs in the sixth to tie the game before Goan quickly put the Blue Hens back on top with a lead-off home run in the home half. Freshmen Bryce Greenly followed a Loynd walk with a base hit to score him to make it 7-5.
Â
Goan's big day would continue with a double to left field to score sophomore Tyler Juhl and Loynd immediately followed with a base hit to score Goan.
Â
Goan was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Loynd was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Senior Vinny Vaccone reached base three times and stole a pair of bases.
Â
Senior Derek Wakeley worked 3.0 scoreless innings to earn the save, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Â
Delaware gets back to action when Rhode Island makes the trip to Bob Hannah Stadium for a four-game weekend series, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. Friday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday.

Notes
- With senior Jack Goan and freshman Joey Loynd each homering twice, it was the first time Delaware had multiple players with multiple home runs in the same game since March 15, 2014 when Norm Donkin and Ty Warrington each had two big flies against Fairfield.
- Loynd became the first freshman with a multi-home run game for Delaware since Nick Patten hit two against Towson on May 13, 2016.
- It was the first multi-home run game for a single player since May 18, 2017 when Patten again hit two against Charleston.
- Loynd's home run in the third inning was the first of his career.
- Goan's four RBIs are tied for his Delaware career high, which he has accomplished four times.
- The duo of junior Jordan Hutchins and sophomore Joseph Carpenter started its 69th straight game together while Goan made his 54th straight start.
- Loynd and senior Vinny Vaccone have each reached base in their last seven games.
