Delaware’s Comeback Falls Just Short in 68-67 Loss To Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware nearly rallied from a 20-point deficit, but Ebby Asamoah's last-second three-pointer came just after the final horn as the Blue Hens dropped a 68-67 heartbreaker to Hofstra Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Hofstra scored the first 13 points of the day, and held a double digit the lead the rest of the half. The Pride went up 39-19 with 3:11 remaining before the Blue Hens closed the period with a 9-2 run to close within 41-28 at the break.
Delaware quickly scored the first three buckets of the second half to make it a seven-point game, but the Pride remained in control and eventually extended the margin to 62-47 with eight minutes to play. The Blue Hens would immediately respond by scoring the next 10 points, pulling within 62-57 on a steal and layup by Asamoah with four and a half minutes to go.
Hofstra was still up 68-62 before Asamoah buried a three-pointer, and following a Pride miss, Dylan Painter scored inside to bring the Blue Hens within a point. The Pride then missed a pair of shots at the other end, giving Delaware a chance to complete the comeback. Ryan Allen made a crosscourt pass to Asamoah in the left corner, and following a pump fake, his three-point attempt swished through the basket but came after the buzzer.
Andrew Carr enjoyed his second impressive performance of the weekend, as the freshman led the Blue Hens with a season-high 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting while adding six rebounds on the day. Painter, who recorded his third straight double-double, added 17 points and 15 boards, while Asamoah contributed 11 points and Allen chipped in eight.
Delaware shot 52 percent for the game, including 65.4 percent in the second half, but committed a season-high 20 turnovers. Hofstra, which salvaged a weekend split after falling to the Blue Hens by 18 on Friday, was led by Jalen Ray who finished with 23 points.
Martin Ingelsby
"I'm proud of our group for battling back, but we just dug ourselves too big a hole against an experienced team like Hofstra. We gave ourselves a chance at the end, but just got a little too disorganized. I give our guys credit for fighting back, but we're disappointed we didn't get it. We'll be in this situation again, and we'll be better for this experience."
Dylan Painter
"Our turnovers early hurt us and put us in a hole. We had momentum late, but needed one more minute. I'm proud of how we fought, but at the end of the day we're not into moral victories and a loss isn't good enough."
