Cas Van Altena sent in a long cross from the right side to Burnz, who headed the ball home from eight yards out to set off the Charleston celebration.
The game got off to a promising start for the Blue Hens, who scored three goals in the first 37 minutes. Orri Thorhallsson put Delaware on the board in the 20th minute when he collected a loose ball off a corner kick and fired a shot home from 15 yards out.
In the 35th minute Thorhallsson received a service from Tiago Santos and tapped the ball to Brandon Sengphachanh, who scored on a 12-yard strike to make it a 2-0 game. The Blue Hens added a third goal just 1:24 later when Justin Ruth sent in a cross from the right side that was deflected by Josh Hesson before Santos scored from close range.
Charleston got on the board just 1:08 before halftime on a Jakob Kristensen goal, while Kane Ritchie found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to make it a one-goal game. The Cougars were then awarded a penalty kick following a Blue Hen foul in the box in the 83rd minute, and Jake Nicholson took advantage to score the equalizer.
Delaware held a 16-9 shot advantage, while Charleston had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Scott Sampson made three saves in the Blue Hen net, while Cameron Smith stopped two shots for the Cougars.
