NEWARK, Del. – Ryan Mertz scored twice on his Senior Day but it wasn't enough as the Delaware men's soccer team fell to William & Mary, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Mertz opened the scoring just 2:40 into the contest when Delaware was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Mertz then fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for his first goal of the year.
Alexander Levengood brought the Tribe even in the 14th minute by converting a penalty kick of his own, and the teams went to the half knotted at 1-1.
The Tribe scored twice in a five-minute span early in the second half, as Alfredo Bozalongo scored on a 20-yard free kick before Levengood headed home a cross by Diba Nwegbo in the 60th minute.
Mertz scored his second goal of the day in the 79th minute when he collected a deflected ball and fired a shot off the crossbar and in to make it a 3-2 game.
Pedro Barbolla sailed a shot over the goal less than a minute later, while Carlos Fernandez had two chances in the final minute, but Delaware could not score the equalizer.
"Our program has seen better days, but I'm happy for Ryan to score two goals on his Senior Day," said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy.
