NEWARK, Del. - The No. 23 Delaware field hockey team edged Penn, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Fred P. Rullo Stadium for the Blue Hen's Senior Day.
"Nice win on Senior Day," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "As a program we want to thank Lizzie Gaebel, Grace Hoepfner, Ashley Iannuzzi, Sarah Iannuzzi and Grace Miller for the joy we have had together, their personal growth as student-athletes, and the contributions they made to themselves and Delaware Hockey!"
On a chilly and overcast afternoon, both teams struggled to get the ball moving in the first half, with Delaware facing heavy pressure from Penn. The Blue Hens took three shots, to the Quakers' two in the first half, with the first 30 minutes ending scoreless.
In the seventh minute of the third period, Delaware was able to get on the board with a penalty corner shot by Julia Duffhuis. Teammates Ashlyn Carr and Morgan Bradford gave Duffhuis the assist in the circle.
Duffhuis now has 12 goals on the season, leading the Blue Hens with 25 points. Carr leads the squad with 11 assists.Â
Delaware out-shot Penn 5-1 in the fourth quarter, but both teams remained scoreless, giving the Blue and Gold the 1-0 win.
The Blue and Gold had a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners on the day. Goalkeeper Gaebel had one save in the second period.
"Today we took another step forward in improving defensively and the ability to create scoring opportunities. In the coming days we will focus to improve our scoring conversion rate. It is exciting to see that we are gearing up towards a better team balance and performance as we approach post season."
Delaware finishes its regular season schedule on the road, traveling to Drexel (Oct. 29) and UConn (Oct. 31), before hosting the CAA Field Hockey Championship Nov. 5 and 7.Â
