BANGOR, Maine – Playing their third game in six days Monday evening, the University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the road portion of the schedule with a dominating 83-60 win over Maine (0-3) inside Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.
"Coming out of our first game there were a lot of things that we wanted to talk about in reference to Delaware basketball," said head coach Natasha Adair. "Everything for us starts on the defensive end - that was the conversation today. It was just challenging them from start to finish to play defense, let our defense dictate the offense, let our defense get us out in transition. Every timeout and even at halftime, we checked in with where we were defensively and you can just see the energy and that's how we play. We defend, we rebound, we run and we score - in that order. We just had to get back to the basics and do the things that got us to this point."
Delaware (2-1) opened the game's scoring three seconds in as Lizzie Oleary laid in Tyi Skinner's feed to start a 7-2 Blue Hens run. Maine responded by scoring five straight to make it a 7-all game with 6:29 remaining in the opening quarter. A pair of Ty Battle free throws ignited a 9-0 run for Delaware to take a 16-7 lead. The Black Bears used a 7-2 run of their own to pull within four points to close the quarter, 18-14.
Battle scored seven of Delaware's next 15 points over the second quarter's opening 3:24 to take the double-digit lead, 33-23. Maine then answered with a 9-2 spurt, seven points coming off the hands of Maeve Carroll, to trim the deficit to three (35-32). With 41 seconds remaining, Jasmine Dickey knocked down her 15th of her season-high 32 points (15-of-25 FG) to send the Blue Hens into the break leading 39-32. The third quarter saw Delaware outscore Maine 16-14, holding onto a nine-point lead, 55-46. Enter the fourth quarter where the Blue Hens were simply unstoppable, scoring a quarter-high 28 points, highlighted by Tee Johnson's layup extending the lead to a game-high 25 points, 81-56. The Black Bears scored four points off of free throws to trail by 21 before Johnson laid in two to settle the 83-60 final. Along with setting her season-high in points, Dickey closed out the evening with eight rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two steals in Delaware's victory. Battle followed with 16 points (6-of-11 FG, 4-of-7 FT) and 10 rebounds (six offensive) to post her second double-double of the season. Skinner added 11 points (5-of-10 FG), and seven assists.
Carroll finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists to pace Maine. Anne Simon chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and two steals while Alba Orois dished out a game-high nine assists.
In the end, Delaware finished the evening shooting 53 percent (35-66) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from beyond the arc and 60 percent (9-of-15) from the free-throw line. Maine connected on 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point territory and 90 percent (9-of-10) from the charity stripe. Delaware held a plus-7 rebound margin (39-32) while scoring 10 second-chance points off of nine offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Maine in assists (17-15), blocks (5-2), steals (5-4), points in the paint (50-40) and fast-break points (19-9). Both teams were even with nine bench points while the Blue Hens scored 15 points off of 13 Black Bear miscues.
