DOVER, Del. – The Delaware women's basketball team traveled down the interstate to take on Delaware State in the Route 1 Rivalry, sponsored by DE529. Head coach Natasha Adair and the squad took care of business as they registered a 79-48 victory inside Memorial Hall Gym to add a W to the all-time series tally.
"Coming down here is a rivalry. It has been through the years," said Adair. "We told them they'd play hard. We wanted to dictate the tempo and get off to a good start. We knew that we'd get Delaware State's best and that's what we expected. Jasmine Dickey, I can't say enough about her, but we also can't do it without a supporting cast. Tyi Skinner has grown game by game. For her to be able to lead and manage. Makayla Pippin stepped up. Ty Battle is so consistent. For me to be able to walk in the locker room with the Route 1 Rivalry trophy makes me super proud of this group and how we fight."
Seniors Jasmine Dickey and Ty Battle controlled the tempo for Delaware tonight in Dover. Battle scored Delaware's first-seven points as she started the game 3 of 3 from the floor to light up the scoreboard.
The Blue Hens shot 40 percent from the field in the first quarter and carried that energy to the second.
In the second quarter, Dickey added 10 points to her four from the first quarter to aid in the Blue Hens hitting 45 percent of their shots. With just one turnover on the stat sheet, the Blue Hens did indeed take care of the ball.
At the half, both Battle and Dickey were in double figures, as the Blue Hens carried a 43-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
It was a fairly even game in the third quarter. The Hornets tried to close the gap by shooting 50 percent from the field, but it wasn't enough to even put a dent in the Blue Hens' lead.
Dickey scored eight straight points for Delaware to start the fourth quarter. Add buckets by Skinner and Pippin, and the Blue Hens took a 12-3 edge to start the fourth quarter. With a few razzle-dazzle acrobatic moves the Blue Hens outscored the Hornets 21-12 in the final quarter to seal the win and bring the trophy back to Newark.
Dickey finished with her second double-double of the season and second consecutive 30-plus point games as she netted 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Battle recorded her third consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lizzie Oleary chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds to round out the double-figure scoring for the Blue Hens.
"We want to make sure to take care of the ball and execute," Adair said. "We want to make sure we keep getting better offensively and defensively. We're very goal-oriented. When we put them all together the win column will take care of itself."
Delaware (3-1) picked up its second straight win of the season and 12th victory overall against Delaware State to move its all-time series lead to 12-1 against the in-state foe. The Blue Hens shot 39.7 percent from the floor and edged the Hornets in the paint 42-18. With 20 points off turnovers, 14 points from the bench and 14 points from fast breaks, the Blue Hens played an all-around game inside Memorial Hall Gym.
Delaware State (0-4) shot 19 of 55 from the field to shoot 34.5 percent tonight. The Hornets struggled from the charity stripe connecting on 6 of 14, while they shot 50 percent from three-point land going 4 of 8. The Hornets were led in scoring by Joy Watkins' 13 points. Unique Miller added 11 points and nine boards for the Hornets.
