NEWARK, Del. – Ryan Allen scored a career-high 35 points as the University of Delaware men's basketball team outlasted La Salle, 85-82 in overtime, in the Blue Hens' home opener Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Allen finished 11 of 17 from the field and knocked down five three-pointers, and has now hit 250 triples and scored 1,500 points during his UD career. Dylan Painter recorded his second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Kevin Anderson contributed 10 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Delaware took a 35-30 halftime lead following Painter's nine points in the final minute of the period, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer. The Blue Hens went up seven early in the second half, before the Explorers responded with a nine-point surge to go in front, 45-43, with 13 minutes to play.
UD was back up 64-60 with 2:34 remaining following two Allen free throws at the 2:34 mark, while Jameer Nelson, Jr. went 1 of 2 from the line to make it a 69-67 game with 17 seconds on the clock. La Salle's Jhamir Brickus then converted a three-point play to give the Explorers the lead, and after Allen was fouled shooting a three-pointer with two seconds left, he hit 1 of 3 free throws to send the game to overtime tied at 70-70.
Delaware never trailed in the extra session, scoring the first three points and eventually going up 79-74 on two Ebby Asamoah free throws with 56 seconds to go. The Blue Hens went up six twice in the final seconds, before a last second triple by Brickus closed the scoring.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"That was a heck of a college basketball game. It was a character-building win for our program early in the season. We had two tough road games, but came back home to a great atmosphere. I thank our fans, the students, the alumni, and the community – they saw a heck of a game so hopefully they can keep coming out and supporting our group. Everybody stepped up at different times throughout the game, and for us to lose Andrew and Dylan in regulation and still find a way to get it done in overtime, I think that is just huge for our confidence."
Ryan Allen
"I'm a fifth-year senior and wanted to show leadership on the court. Our crowd, especially the students, was fantastic, and with the energy I get from the fans, everything I did was for them. I've got to do my best to give them a show."
