ESTERO, Fla. – Ryan Allen had another big game while Delaware shut down Appalachian State late as the Blue Hens defeated the Mountaineers, 75-68, Monday night at Hertz Arena in the first round of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Delaware advances to face Fordham, which defeated Akron earlier in the night, in a semifinal matchup Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Allen, who was named CAA Player of the Week earlier in the day after his 35-point effort vs. La Salle, again paced the Blue Hens with 22 points and tied his career-high with six three-pointers. Dylan Painter added 17 points, Jameer Nelson, Jr. contributed 15 and Andrew Carr poured in 12 for Delaware, which shot 61.0 percent (25 of 41) from the field and knocked down 18 of 21 free throw attempts.
Adrian Delph scored 39 points for App State on the strength of seven three-pointers while Justin Forrest added 10, but no other Mountaineer scored more than four.
Delaware led 23-18 at the 8:10 mark of the first half, but App State scored the next 10 points to go up 28-23 with 4:40 on the clock. The Mountaineers increased their lead to 35-29 before UD scored the final six points of the stanza to pull even at 35-35 at the break.
Delph scored the first five points of the second half, and App State held the lead until consecutive triples by Nelson, Jr. and Allen put the Blue Hens up 53-50 at the 10:44 mark.
UD led by just a point at 62-61 but then went on a decisive 10-point run, extending the margin to 72-61 on a Nelson, Jr. dunk with four a half minutes to play. The Blue Hens, who held the Mountaineers without a field goal from the 8:19 mark until their final three-pointer with 13 seconds left that capped the scoring, were not threatened in the late stages.
Martin Ingelsby
"This was a heck of a college basketball game with two good teams going at it. I'm proud of our effort, especially the way we defended in the last 10 minutes. Kevin Anderson really defended Delph down the stretch. We had a size advantage and imposed our will inside. Andrew Carr had an outstanding game offensively and Ryan Allen was fearless, he willed in a couple threes when we needed them. This was a great team effort and we're looking forward to playing again tomorrow."
