Volleyball Downs #5 Northeastern in Straight Sets to Advance to CAA Semis

TOWSON, Md. – The fourth-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team took care of business Thursday afternoon by capturing a straight-set (25-16, 26-24, 25-23) victory over fifth-seeded Northeastern (12-15) in the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, presented by Primis, quarterfinal round inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. With the win, the Blue Hens (15-12) advance to their 11th semifinal and will face the top-seeded/regular-season champions/defending conference champions Towson (24-4).
The Blue Hens opened the first set with a 5-1 run ignited by Kirah Johnson and Lani Mason raising up for a block assist.
Erica Staunton paced Northeastern with a match-high 16 kills to go with five digs. Jessica Frannea had 17 assists whle Kayla Martin scooped up 14 digs.

This "win or go home" is personal for the Blue Hens as the team opened the match with their most dominate attacking percentage of .400 to finish the match outhitting Northeastern .239 to .146. Delaware led the way in points (59-44), kills (44-32), aces (5-2) and assists (40-31) while the Huskies held the edge in digs (45-41). Lauryn Richardson nailed down Lily Rogers' feed to put Delaware up by five, 8-3, before Northeastern closed the gap to two after scoring three straight points, 8-6. The Blue & Gold responded quickly with four-straight points to extend the lead to six, 12-6. The Huskies made it a 18-14 game and then it was all about Grace Underwood. Set two saw both teams fighting for the advantage where there were two lead changes and seven ties. Johnson then finished off Rogers' dish to kick start a 6-1 run to take the 13-9 lead. Northeastern wasn't going away quietly as the team knotted up the set three times, including scoring three-unanswered points (24-24). The reality of advancing to the semis was all the fuel the Blue Hens needed as a Lani Mason kill ignited a 9-3 run. The Huskies were determined for their season not to end and answered by going on a 10-2 run of their own, 13-11. Delaware remained poised and used an 8-2 run to go up by four, 19-15. The seesaw battle commenced where the Huskies made it a 23-all game after Marika Virthe's kill. Johnson finished with 11 kills (.786 attacking percentage) and three blocks to lead the Blue Hens to victory. Underwood followed with eight kills and six blocks while Mason had a match-high 16 digs to go with eight kills and two block assists. Richardson and Seemans added six kills each.
