MIAMI – The University of Delaware women's basketball team captured a 72-63 victory over Chicago State (1-6) to close out the FIU Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon from Ocean Bank Convocation Center in Miami. With the win, the Blue Hens (6-1) extend their winning streak to five games.
"Another gritty win! I am very proud of the team on the road to close out a competitive Thanksgiving tournament" said head coach Natasha Adair. "Our goal when we left Newark was to win two games. And we talked to the players about defending, rebounding, making sure we were able to limit their paint points. Chicago State is another opponent and I am thankful for the competition that we've had in this tournament because it will continue to prepare us for what we need to do in conference play."
Makayla Pippin laid in two 23 seconds into the opening quarter to kick start a 13-4 Delaware run, highlighted by Ty Battle and Jasmine Dickey combining for 10 points. Chicago State responded with a 5-1 run to close the gap to five, 14-9, with 1:51 left. Over the remaining 1:39, Dickey scored the Blue Hens next four points to push the lead to nine, 18-9.
The Cougars used a 14-5 spurt from 9:28 to 2:47 in the second quarter to make it a 23-all game. Mar Tejedor found a running Battle for a layup to ignite a 10-2 run in the remaining 2:31 to send the Blue Hens into the break with the 33-25 lead.
Heading into the third quarter, Chicago State remained determined to keep the game close as Aaliyah Collins' pair of free throws pulled the Cougars within one, 33-32. Delaware saw its lead grow as large as nine (52-43), thanks to Tyi Skinner connecting from downtown, with 1:15 left.
Skinner knocked down a routine jumper at the 8:51 mark of the fourth to balloon Delaware's lead to a game-high 11 points, 56-45. Chicago State went on a 9-2 surge to slice the deficit to two, 60-58, with 5:52 remaining. The Blue Hens remained poised in the final 5:29, using a 12-5 run, capped by two free-throws by Skinner, to settle the 72-63 final.
Dickey finished with a game-high 23 points (10-of-26 FG, 3-of-4 FT) and 10 rebounds to post her third double-double of the season. She added three assists, two steals and a block to her stat line. Skinner followed with a season-high 20 points (5-of-8 FG, 2-of-5 3FG, 8-of-9 FT) to go with four assists and two steals. Battle added 14 points (6-of-11 FG, 2-of-6 FT) and 11 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the season.
Adair added, "Our bench showed up today. I want to give kudos to Jadaia Reid - Maddie Sims has been consistent for us - not having Ty Battle yesterday but then she shows up again today. We spoke about it today and said we need you to be big today and then she falls right back in line with her double-double. Jasmine Dickey, again it wasn't the 48-point performance but it was another consistent double-double performance, and being able to give that effort coming off such a great performance just less than 24 hours prior speaks volumes about who she is as a competitor. Tyi Skinner is leading us, for her to be able to for back-to-back days play pretty much the entire game both nights - to come out of this with 20 points and leading us in so many different ways out there on the floor. Going into the fourth, it was a close game, and we said we need everyone. We need our energy, we need that sixth woman and they show up. It was another great team win, we learned about ourselves as a team, we grew as a team and we are coming home with two more victories"
Collins paced Chicago State with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Delaware shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from beyond the arc and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line. Chicago State connected on 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three-point territory and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens held the rebound margin advantage (32-31) while scoring 12 second-chance points off of nine offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Chicago State in assists (14-6), steals (9-8) and fast break points (13-2). Chicago State held the edge in points in the paint (38-32) and bench points (18-13) while scoring 17 points off of 21 Blue Hen turnovers. Both teams were even in blocks with two apiece.
