Women’s Basketball Battles With Columbia

NEW YORK – The University of Delaware women's basketball team came up short with its late-game surge Thursday evening dropping a 73-67 decision against Columbia (7-2) inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. The loss stops the Blue Hens' winning streak at five games as the team moves to a 6-2 record on the young season.
Jasmine Dickey opened the scoring 22 seconds in with a triple for Delaware to take the early 3-0 lead. After Columbia's Abbey Hsu knocked down a jumper to make it a 3-2 game 17 seconds later, Ty Battle found a running Makayla Pippin to give Delaware the 5-2 lead. The Lions responded with a 17-9 run, with Hsu being responsible for seven points, to take the 19-14 lead into the second quarter.
Delaware saw Columbia's lead grow as high as 11 (23-14) after back-to-back layups by Kitty Henderson and Jaida Patrick with 8:53 remaining. The Blue Hens weren't discouraged by the scoreboard as a Tyi Skinner triple at the 7:05 mark ignited a critical 14-5 run over a span of 3:35 to trail by two, 30-28. The Lions remained in control closing out the second quarter scoring with a 5-2 run to send the 35-31 game into the break.
Trailing 38-31, Delaware erupted with a 21-9 run, with Dickey and Skinner combining for 15 points, to erase the deficit and regain the lead. Dickey dropped in a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in the third to go up by eight, 56-48, before Henderson made it a 56-50 game going into the final quarter.
The Blue Hens took an eight-point lead courtesy of Skinner's jumper with 9:21 showing on the fourth-quarter clock. The Lions then went on a 14-0 spurt from 9:02 to 3:06 to take the 64-58 edge. Delaware showed resilience as Tara Cousins knocked down a much-needed triple to kick start a 9-2 Blue Hen run and take its final lead of the night, 67-66. Hsu's three-point play with 29 seconds left provided Columbia with the last 7-0 run to settle the 73-67 final.
Dickey finished with 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists to pace Delaware. Skinner followed by tying her career-best 22 points to go with five rebounds. Battle added nine points and nine rebounds.
Hsu finished with a game-high 27 points to lead Columbia to victory while Henderson poured in 11 points. Kaitlyn Davis pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds.
Delaware shot 35.2 percent (25-of-71) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 60 percent (12-of-20) from the free-throw line. Columbia connected on 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point territory and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Lions held the rebound margin advantage (45-40) while scoring four second-chance points off of six offensive rebounds. Columbia outplayed Delaware in assists (19-9), blocks (4-3), steals (7-6), points in the paint (48-32) and bench points (23-8). Delaware led the way in fast break points (19-15 del) while scoring 22 points off 17 Lion turnovers.
