NEWARK, Del. – Delaware put all five starters in double figures and the Blue Hens pulled away late to post a 75-67 victory over LIU Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Andrew Carr led the way with a season-high 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field, while Kevin Anderson added 13 points and five assists. Jameer Nelson, Jr. contributed 12 points on the night, while Dylan Painter and Ryan Allen chipped in 11 apiece.
The Blue Hens led by 15 early in the second half, and were still up 50-36 when Anderson found Nelson, Jr. for a dunk with 18:18 to play. However the Sharks answered with 10 straight points and eventually pulled even at 55-55 with 11 minutes remaining.
Delaware was up by just a point at 63-62 at the 6:18 mark but then scored the next eight points, the final six by Carr, to extend the margin to 71-62 with 4:20 on the clock. LIU scored five straight points to close within four, before Painter scored inside and Allen slammed home a dunk on a fastbreak to close the scoring.
The Blue Hens, who won their second straight home game to open the year, forced 16 LIU turnovers and held a 20-8 advantage in second chance points.
Delaware led 24-18 midway through the first half before going on a 12-2 run, extending the margin to 36-20 on a Carr three-pointer with 6:44 to play. The Blue Hens were still up 16 with a minute and a half left following a Jyare Davis layup, before LIU scored the final four points of the period to close within 45-33 at the break.
Martin Ingelsby
"This was a tough game. I thought we got into a good rhythm on the offensive end in the first half, and then it was a hard second half. They made their run, and I'm proud of how we responded once they tied it. We had to do some tough stuff. We've got a ways to go on the defensive end, but our guys stepped up and made plays when they needed to. We did a good job executing late with a couple drives and getting Dylan a layup. We got it done, and I'm proud of our group."
