DOVER, Del. – Delaware used a strong defensive effort to post a 59-48 victory over Delaware State in the Route 1 Rivalry Thursday night at Memorial Hall.
The Blue Hens, who won their second straight game, held the Hornets to just 34.0 percent shooting including only 3 of 14 from three-point range. Delaware shot 44.4 percent and knocked down nine shots from behind the arc.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. paced the Blue Hens with 16 points, while Ryan Allen added 14 and moved into fifth place on the program's career scoring list. Jyare Davis scored a season-high nine points off the bench, while Dylan Painter contributed eight points and a team-leading six rebounds.
Delaware improved to 16-5 all-time against Delaware State, and won for the ninth time in 10 trips to Dover.
Delaware held the Hornets scoreless for nearly the first six minutes, and scored five straight points to go up 12-6 on a Nelson, Jr. three-pointer with 8:38 left in the opening half.
The Blue Hens were up just three late in the stanza, but Gianmarco Arletti and Allen drained triples to make it a 26-17 game with 1:09 on the first half clock. D'Marco Baucum then hit one free throw for the Hornets before Myles Carter added a layup to cut Delaware's advantage to six at the break.
Delaware opened the second half with eight consecutive points, as a Nelson, Jr. three-pointer increased the margin to 34-20 two and a half minutes into the period. The Blue Hens were up nine before going on a 12-point run, taking a 49-28 lead on an Allen triple with nine minutes remaining.
The lead grew to as many as 23, and UD was still up 59-39 before the Hornets scored the final nine points of the contest.
Martin Ingelsby
"Give Stan's team a lot of credit, they battled and slowed the game down on us. We couldn't get into a rhythm offensively, and 18 turnovers is too many. We came on the road in a tough environment and responded on the defensive end so that's something to build on, but we've got to be better. We need to be selfless on the offensive end. We've done it in spurts, but not yet for 40 minutes."
