NEWARK, Del. – We are #Elite at HOME! The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season Tuesday evening against visiting Chestnut Hill. The Blue Hens (1-0) extended their home winning streak to 14 games after capturing a dominating 87-48 victory in front of a crowd they haven't played in front of since the 2019-20 campaign.
"We have been chomping at the bit for this game for how long and over a year without our fans," said head coach Natasha Adair. "I am so happy to be able to play all of our players and for them to be able to get all of that excitement, nervousness and anxiousness feeling off their backs. I want to celebrate with our team a win, our first win of the season together. Today, I am proud of how they competed and our effort."
The first quarter was off to a slow start with Delaware only leading by two after Chestnut Hill's Leah Miller's jumper. With 3:49 showing on the first quarter clock, Jasmine Dickey knocked down a jumper to ignite a 10-4 Blue Hen run to claim the eight-point lead, 19-11.
Dickey opened the second stanza scoring with a jumper to push Delaware's lead to double-digits, 21-11. Emily Chmiel's jumper was able to trim the Griffins' deficit to single digits, 21-13, with 9:07 remaining. The Blue & Gold continued to apply pressure by using a 14-4 spurt kick started by Ty Battle's layup to extend the lead to 18 points, 35-17. Chestnut Hill made it a 14-point game with 14 seconds left before Tyi Skinner knocked down two to send the 37-21 game into the break.
It was more of the Blue Hens show entering the third period as the team saw its lead balloon to 32 points after scoring 10 unanswered points in the remaining 2:16. In the final quarter, Delaware seemed to be on fire from deep as the team went 5-for-8 from three, including Mar Tejedor's three-pointer that put the Blue Hens up by a game-high 41 points. Chmiel laid in Morgan Sterner's feed to settle the 87-48 final.
Dickey finished with 25 points (7-for-16 FG, 1-for-2 3FG, 10-for-12 FT) and 10 rebounds to post her first double-double of the season. She added two steals and two assists to her stat line. Skinner followed with 18 points (4-for-9 3FG, 2-for-2 FT), seven assists and six rebounds. In her collegiate debut, Tara Cousins chipped in 15 points (6-for-9, 3-for-6 3FG), four rebounds and two steals coming off the pine. Battle added 10 points (4-for-9 FG) and six rebounds.
Miller paced Chestnut Hill with 12 points and eight rebounds while Bri Hewlett poured in 11 points.
In the end, Delaware finished the evening shooting 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line. Chestnut Hill connected on 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point territory and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the charity stripe. Delaware held a +19 rebound margin (52-33) while scoring 20 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Chestnut Hill in assists (16-10), blocks (5-1), steals (8-2), points in the paint (34-22), bench points (46-26), and fast break points (12-7) while scoring 22 points off of 24 Griffin miscues.
Adair added, "It was so exciting to be back in the Bob and watch our players and coaches come out of the tunnel. Being able to see our fans that we haven't seen over a year and have them cheering us on and cheering us to victory. They got to see some of our returners but they got to see some newcomers as well. This is game one and there are going to be some many exciting games in the Bob Carpenter Center. They are our sixth man/woman and we needed them tonight and we are going to need them every night. I am happy that is basketball season and that we tipped off tonight but most importantly I am happy that the best fans in the land were cheering us on. Go Blue Hens!"
