Women’s Basketball Tussles With SMU

DALLAS, Texas – The University of Delaware women's basketball dropped a 61-55 road decision to SMU (4-5) Tuesday evening inside Moody Coliseum. The Blue Hens now move to a 6-3 record on the young season.
11 seconds into the game and Jasmine Dickey knocks down a routine jumper to give Delaware the early 2-0 advantage. With the scoreboard showing 6-4 in favor of SMU, Dickey and Ty Battle worked together to be responsible for the Blue Hens 8-4 run in the remaining 2:47 to take the 12-10 lead.
SMU opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run, thanks to a Danielle Sanderlin layup. With 7:19 showing on the second quarter clock, Delaware put together a 12-6 spurt, capped by Tyi Skinner layup, to send the Blue Hens into the break with the two-point advantage, 24-22.
To open the third quarter scoring, Dickey found a running Tee Johnson to lay in two at the 9:34 mark for Delaware to take the 26-22 lead. The Mustangs answered with a 15-8 run over the next 8:02 to hold the narrow three-point lead, 37-34, heading into the final quarter.
Battle sank a freebie 30 seconds into the fourth quarter to ignite a critical 13-6 run for Delaware 47-43 lead. With 4:13 left, Skinner knocked down her fourth three-pointer to give the Blue Hens its final lead of the night, 50-46. Jasmine Smith responded with a triple of her own to kick start SMU's 15-5 run over the final 4:13 to settle the 61-55 final.
Battle paced Delaware with a game-high 17 points and 15 rebounds to post her sixth double-double of the season. She added two assists, two steals and a block to her stat line. Skinner followed with 16 points and four rebounds. Dickey added seven points and nine rebounds.
Sydne Wiggins finished with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists in SMU's win. Kayla White also poured in 17 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out two assists and nabbed two steals while Savannah Wilkinson chipped in 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Delaware finished the evening shooting 32.4 percent (23-of-71) from the field, 25 percent (5-of-20) from three-point territory and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the free throw line. SMU connected on 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe. Delaware held a plus-2 rebound margin (45-43) while scoring 12 second-chance points off of 17 offensive rebounds. The Blue Hens led the way in assists (16-15), blocks (5-4), steals (7-6) and points in the paint (26-22). SMU held the edge in fast break points (7-6) and bench points (23-11) while scoring 12 points off of 14 Blue Hen miscues.
