NEWARK, Del. - The 2021 Delaware women's soccer season came to a close on Oct. 31, but there were many moments along the way to look back on.
Welcome Newbies
Three freshmen. Caitlin St. Leger, Sydni Wright and Mia Reed, all earned a start during the 2021 campaign. St. Leger started 17 of 18 contests in her first season as a Blue Hen. She recorded two assists on the season. Wright started 14 of 18 matches during her rookie season. She registered a pair of assists and a goal. Reed appeared in three games, including earning the start at Elon. She recorded nine saves in 136 minutes of action.Â
Going Down in History
Goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky concluded her UD career with 116 saves to rank No. 11 on the Blue Hen career chart. Sara D'Appolonia finished her career tied for 15th in goals scored with 15. She led or tied the team in points scored and goals from 2019-21. D'Appolonia scored the fifth-fastest goal to start a game on Sept. 22, 2021 vs. Seton Hall, when she scored 3:00 into the game.
And the honor goes to…
Krinsky, Olivia Schuck, and Wright collected 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer postseason accolades.
Krinsky was named to the All-CAA Second Team as a goalkeeper. It was the second straight season Krinsky earned all-conference accolades, after picking up third-team honors in the spring. Krinsky started and appeared in 17 matches for the Blue Hens this season. She ranked second in league play in saves per game at 5.13, tallying 41 total saves in CAA-only matches. Krinsky finished the fall with 64 saves across all matches.
Schuck, a three-time All-CAA honoree, co-captain, and midfielder for Delaware, wrapped up her Blue Hen career by earning all-conference third team accolades. Second on the team in minutes played with 1,581, Schuck started every match she appeared in. The playmaker shifted her opponents' game plan and kept them on their toes often, as she had a strong presence on the field with and without the ball. The veteran earned third-team accolades in 2019 and first-team honors in 2020. She was also named the 2020 CAA Defensive Player of the Year.
One of three freshmen to earn a start this fall for Delaware, Wright started 14 of 18 matches in her first season. An offensive and defensive threat for the Blue Hens, Wright shined all season long, as she registered one goal and two assists in 2021. The rookie ranked sixth on the team in minutes played with 1,309. Wright became the 12th Blue Hen voted to the CAA All-Rookie team since its inception in 2004.
The Conclusion
Delaware concluded the 2021 fall season with a 5-11-2 overall record and 2-5-2 conference mark. D'Appolonia, a senior, led the squad with three goals and two assists for eight points, including two gamewinners. Anna Diffendal finished second in scoring with a team-high three assists to go along with a pair of goals scored. Ten different Blue Hens scored at least one goal during the season, while six players chipped in at least one assist.Â
