Ty Battle records CAA-leading 11th double-double in win
NEWARK, Del. – A balanced effort led Delaware past Drexel, 68-60, in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action inside the Bob Carpenter Center Friday night.
The Blue Hens (15-2, 12-1 CAA) beat the Dragons (9-5, 6-3 CAA) for the first time since the CAA quarterfinals on March 13, 2015. Delaware's third straight win also improved its home record to an unblemished 9-0 this season.
Delaware's front line had a big game, with redshirt junior forward Ty Battle recording her conference-leading 11th double-double of the season. Battle notched a team-high 18 points on an efficient 8-for-11 from the field, plus a game-high 11 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
Senior forward Lizzie Oleary poured in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, grabbed six rebounds, and added two assists and a block. Junior guard Jasmine Dickey filled the stat sheet with 11 points, nine boards, a team-high four assists and three steals, and a block.
Freshman guard Tyi Skinner drained a three at the buzzer as the first quarter ended, which sparked a 14-0 run for the Blue Hens; Delaware held a 41-26 at the half. Drexel stormed back in the second half and cut the Delaware lead to just 57-53 with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Dickey responded with an acrobatic jumper through traffic in the lane, drawing contact and completing the three-point play. After the teams traded free throws, junior guard Paris McBride pushed the ball in transition and dished to Oleary for a bucket that put Delaware ahead 64-55 with 2:26 remaining. A Battle lay-up on the next Blue Hens possession would seal the game.
Drexel's Hannah Nihill led all scorers with 32 points on 13-of-28 shooting from the floor.
Delaware used its size advantage to out-rebound Drexel 48-36, outscore the Dragons in the paint 40-28, and block five Drexel shots. The Blue Hens shot 40.6% (26-64) from the field and knocked down 92.3% (12-13) of their free throws.
Delaware travels to Philadelphia for the second half of the series with Drexel on Sunday, Feb. 14 from the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
