Delaware defeats Towson 80-54; Dickey leads Blue Hens with 29 points and 18 rebounds
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware women's basketball clinched its first Colonial Athletic Association Regular Season Championship since 2012-13 with an emphatic 80-54 win over Towson Saturday afternoon inside the Bob Carpenter Center.
With one game left in the regular season, the Blue Hens (18-3, 15-2 CAA) have also secured the no. 1 seed for the CAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the CAA.
Junior guard Jasmine Dickey made a statement in the CAA Player of the Year race with a game-high 29 points, a career-high-tying 18 rebounds, and four assists. On the defensive end, she recorded a block and a steal, and helped contain Kionna Jeter (the CAA's leading scorer at 23.4 points per game) to just 17 points on 7-of-22 shooting from the field. This is the sixth double-double and 15th 20-point game of the season for Dickey, who has scored in double figures for 23 straight games dating back to last season.
Senior forward Lizzie Oleary put in a complete performance, tying career highs with 14 points and three blocks, while grabbing six rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle recorded her CAA-leading 15th double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and corralling 15 rebounds in addition to three blocks.
Freshman guard Tyi Skinner rounded out the Blue Hens in double figures with 13 points, knocking down three of her six shots from behind the 3-point arc.
Delaware held a massive 63-38 advantage in rebounding, including 28 offensive boards compared to 21 defensive boards from Towson. The 63 rebounds are tied for the second-most in a single game in program history, behind only the 71 rebounds from the season opener against Salem.
The Blue Hens also held significant advantages in second-chance points (23-15), points in the paint (32-20) and free throw percentage (80%-50%).
Holding a 42-35 lead midway through the third quarter, the Blue Hens went on a 9-0 run out of the media timeout, capped off by fast-break buckets from Skinner and senior guard Tee Johnson. Delaware also opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run sparked by a Skinner 3 that put the game away for good.
After leading 33-28 at halftime, Delaware outscored Towson 47-26 in the second half.
