A combined 21 runs closes out the series
Â
"I thought we put ourselves in position to have a chance and a few of our young guys really put together some great at-bats," said head coach Jim Sherman. "It would have been a really fun game to win, so it's a tough one to be on the losing side of."
Â
The Blue Hens got out to an early lead after a few Villanova errors helped them plate one in the first, followed by redshirt junior Jordan Hutchins' two-RBI double in the second to make it 3-1.
Â
The Wildcats responded, scoring seven-unanswered from the third through fifth inning to jump out to an 8-3 lead. Senior Jack Goan and junior Joseph Carpenter each picked up RBIs in the fifth to make it 8-6.
Â
Villanova was able to tack on another three-spot in the six before Delaware responded with four of its own in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game. Freshman Joey Loynd and Goan hit back-to-back doubles and freshman Aidan Riley singled home Goan. Freshman Mitchell Balint had another big hit, bringing home Riley and classmate Aidan Kane picked up his first career hit to score Vaccone.
Â
The Wildcat bullpen bunkered down and held Delaware scoreless over the next two.
Â
Loynd had a 2-for-3 day with two runs and Balint collected a pair of hits in five trips with an RBI. Kane reached in 3-of-4 of his trips with a hit and two walks, scoring two runs.
Â
Freshman Dom Velazquez made his second start and lasted 4.0 innings with seven punchouts, allowing six earned. Classmate David Keane had a strong showing out of the bullpen, allowing no runs in 2.2 innings of work with a strikeout and two hits. Graduate student Derek Wakeley worked a clean eighth with two strikeouts.
Â
Delaware takes a rare weekend off before another two-game set with a Philly foe, traveling to Saint Joseph's March 27 and hosting the Hawks on March 28.
