Seemans notches her third career double-double
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team got out to an early lead against Big 12 foe West Virginia Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center, but ultimately fell in a 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 12-25, 21-25) decision.
Freshman Savannah Seemans picked up her third double-double of her rookie campaign, tallying 13 kills with 15 digs, hitting .310 to lead the Delaware attack.
Seemans was part of the big first set by the Blue Hens, with five putaways to help Delaware hit .298 in the opener and sideout at a 70% clip.
The Blue Hens jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the second, before West Virginia rallied back for three straight to tie it and eventually go on a 5-0 run late in the frame to make it 19-15 and grab momentum. The Mountaineers took the second and came out red hot in the third, hitting .391 in the set to jump out to a 2-1 match lead.
Again, Delaware jumped out to an early lead in the fourth, including a hammer by redshirt sophomore Adelina Rivera who came off the bench to put away six kills, hitting .417 in just three sets.
The Blue Hens extended their lead to 8-2 after junior Grace Underwood and sophomore Lauryn Richardson teamed up for back-to-back rejections. A West Virginia timeout cooled off Delaware's momentum and the Mountaineers were able to take the set and the match.
Richardson finished with six kills and a career-high five blocks while freshman Lily Rogers was versatile with five kills, 19 assists and six digs.
Delaware makes a quick turnaround, returning to CAA action when it hosts Hofstra for two matches, Tuesday and Wednesday, both at 5 p.m. inside the Bob Carpenter Center.
