NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Cross Country and Track & Field alumna Marnie Giunta brings home top honors to the state of Delaware after a successful fall cross country campaign at powerhouse Padua Academy.
Giunta, who has been at Padua Academy in Wilmington since 2007, picked up the prestigious U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honor of being named the High School Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year for the state of Delaware.
"There is SO much out there for these girls because of their sport," Giunta told Padua Academy staff. "It gives you a network of people. It gives you drive for life on a professional level. And you can bring this love to wherever the next trail leads you in life."
With her leadership and guidance and the want to help young girls achieve their dreams, it's no wonder that Giunta's passion for the sport of cross country and track & field has led her and the Pandas to great success.
Giunta was honored for her team's achievement during the fall of 2020, where she coached Padua Academy to its eighth cross country state title in school history. To put a little icing on the cake, earlier this month, the Pandas won the Division I, DIAA State Championship title in indoor track & field, compiling almost three times the amount of points as their second-place competitor by winning 10 of the 15 events at the meet.
Giunta competed for the Blue Hens women's cross country and track & field programs from 1990-93. During her time as a Blue Hen, the Giunta was a force to be reckoned with as she still ranks in the Top 25 in the UD indoor record book in the mile run and 1,500 meters. In the outdoor record book, Giunta has top times in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, and 4x800-meter relay.
The winners of the seventh annual High School Cross Country Coaches of the Year Presented by the United States Marine Corps are in consideration for the association's National High School Cross Country Coach of the Year award. One boys coach and one girls coach from among all the states will be selected by a panel of experts and be announced later this month as the national winners.
