WACO, Texas – University of Delaware head football coach Danny Rocco has been named the AFCA FCS Region 1 Coach of the Year after leading the Blue Hens to a perfect regular season and CAA Championship.
In his fourth season at the helm of the Blue Hens, Rocco has Delaware back in the playoffs two out of the last three seasons and has the program set to host its first playoff game since 2010.
He is also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year awards, the seventh time in his career that he is up for the honor. Rocco will receive his seventh career conference championship ring and his first with the Blue Hens.
This is the first AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honor for Rocco and the eighth time a Delaware head coach has won the award, the second-most in FCS, with legendary head coach Tubby Raymond receiving seven awards.
The American Football Coaches Association recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners and will announce the National Coach of the Year leading up to the FCS National Championship game. The regional winners are the finalists for the National Coach of the Year award.
The win over Villanova helped Delaware clinch the CAA Championship and a berth in the FCS Playoffs, beginning Saturday when the Blue Hens host Sacred Heart at Delaware Stadium at 7 p.m. Ticket information can be found here and the game can be seen on ESPN3.
