The 2011 Delaware men's lacrosse team successfully defended its Colonial Athletic Association title by winning the conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens, who finished the year 11-7, won the CAA Tournament for the second straight year, and for the third time in five seasons.
Delaware, led by head coach Bob Shillinglaw, opened the season with three straight wins, and after dropping three of their next four, responded with victories over Hofstra, Towson and Drexel to open league play.
Following a loss to Villanova, the Blue Hens defeated Dartmouth and Saint Joseph's before dropping their final two regular season games.
Delaware earned the fourth seed in the CAA Tournament and upset top-seeded and eighth-ranked Hofstra, 10-9, in the semifinals. The Blue Hens then traveled to UMass for the final, where they posted a 9-7 victory to claim the title. The game was tied 6-6 early in the fourth quarter, but Kevin Kaminski scored twice before Sean Finegan added a tally with 3:32 left to put UD up three.
Kaminski was named the tournament's MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Dan Cooney, Grant Kaleikau and Noah Fossner.
Delaware traveled to sixth-ranked Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as the Blue Hens made a furious comeback by scoring four times in the final 3:45 but fell just short, 15-14.
Defenseman Pat Dowling, who led the Blue Hens with 21 caused turnovers, was named an honorable mention USILA All-American. Kaminski joined Dowling on the All-CAA first team, while Cooney and Kaleikau were second team selections. Fossner, who started all 18 games in the UD goal, was named the UD Alumni Association Team MVP.
