Hofstra Edges Blue Hens in Saturday Doubleheader

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware baseball team dropped a pair of games against Hofstra Saturday afternoon by finals of 9-0 and 8-7. Graduate student Kyle Baker stayed red-hot, picking up four hits on the day.

Game One
Hofstra took a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning before breaking the game open with a seven-run bottom of the eighth to take control.

The Blue Hens threatened multiple times, loading the bases with no outs in the sixth inning and getting runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh, but just could not manage a timely hit.

Freshman Dom Velazquez tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and two earned with eight strikeouts. Velazquez has now had at least eight strikeouts in five of his nine rookie starts.

Baker was 2-for-4 while senior Jack Goan and freshman Joey Loynd each had 2-for-5 games.

Game Two
This time, Delaware jumped out to an early lead with a two-run first inning, highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Goan and Loynd.

Delaware would push across two more runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead before Hofstra erupted for five runs in the home half of the second.
Â
Loynd quickly tied the game with a solo shot in the top of the third.
Â
Each team was able to push across a pair of runs to make it a tie game heading into the sixth before a Hofstra sacrifice fly would be the deciding run.

Junior Mike Biasiello worked a strong 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits and four punch outs.
Â
Baker was 2-for-5 with an RBI and redshirt freshman Jake Dunion came into the game as a replacement, going 2-for-3. Loynd had a 3-for-5 game two and drove in two runs.

The series concludes with a Sunday first pitch at 1 p.m.
