Goan’s Eighth-Inning Blast Gives Blue Hens Series Split

A two-run home run by the senior is the difference

NEWARK, Del. – In his final career plate appearance at Bob Hannah Stadium, senior Jack Goan delivered a two-run blast over the left-field wall to give the Blue Hens a 9-7 victory over CAA-leading Northeastern to close out the regular season Sunday afternoon.

"I couldn't be happier to send this special group of seniors out with an emotional victory," said head coach Jim Sherman. "We really played two of our best games of baseball these last two days and this group had a lot of fun doing so."

The Blue Hens came out of the gates hot, scoring four-unanswered in the first two innings before Northeastern began to chip away with a run in the third and eventually took the lead with a five-spot in the fourth.

Freshman Jake Dunion made it a 6-5 game in the fifth with an opposite-field solo shot before the Huskies countered with a run in the sixth.

Junior Joey Silan came out of the bullpen to keep Northeastern's bats quiet, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings with a pair of punchouts, allowing just one hit.

Freshman Joey Loynd had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score graduate student Kyle Baker and Delaware would tie the game on a passed ball to score senior Vinny Vaccone.

Vaccone reached on a hit-by-pitch to begin the home half of the eighth and Goan followed close behind with a no-doubter to left field to put the Blue Hens in front.

Goan was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Vaccone and Baker were each 2-for-3 with three runs apiece and an RBI each. Baker closed out the regular season on a 15-game hit streak.

Dunion put together a 3-for-5 day while sophomore Austin Colmery was forced into action and picked up a hit and an RBI in his first trip to the plate, going 1-for-3.

Graduate student Derek Wakeley limited some early Northeastern damage out of the bullpen, allowing just two earned on three hits in 2.2 innings of work.

This was the final regular-season game for the Blue Hens in the 2021 season.
