NEWARK, Del. – Fifth-year head coach Mike Barroqueiro and the Delaware women's soccer team are primed and ready for the 2021 fall campaign.
The Blue Hens retain a good amount of their roster from the spring. Delaware returns six players that started in all seven matches last year and a wealth of players with game time experience. In front of Delaware is a competitive schedule that will challenge the blue and gold along the way and keep them Blue Hen ready.
The captains for the 2021 fall season are Sara D'Appolonia, Olivia Schuck, and Lizzie Weimer.
Defense
Schuck returns for her fifth season. She received honorable mentions nods in the preseason by the CAA and is a two-time all-conference honoree and one of the team leaders in minutes played. Schuck, and Anna Sisson started every match last season.
"We are quite possibly deeper this season than ever before across our backline. I'm excited to see what that depth and the competition that goes along with it will provide us," said Barroqueiro. "Being able to hold onto Olivia for another season has been great. Our younger players have stepped up to the plate so far. These kids take great pride in what they do, and we can't wait to see them perform more in live settings as we get ready to open the season."
Goalie
Lauren Krinsky has been the mainstay for the Blue Hens in the net. A third-team All-CAA selection in the spring, Krinsky returns for her senior season. She played all 90 minutes in the net in each of Delaware's matches last season with a goals against average of 2.14 and a save percentage of .773.
"Our goalkeeping has always been a strength for us and to be able to return an all-conference 'keeper in Lauren Krinsky, we feel like we are in a good place again," said Barroqueiro. "All 3, Lauren, Mia (Reed), and Kelly (Chittenden) have worked hard. I do not doubt that this will again be a strong backbone for us. We pride ourselves on limiting our opponents' chances. We have a core of GK's who can certainly do their part to help us keep clean sheets."
Forwards/Midfielders
The Blue Hens used a variety of players to get the ball in the net last season, which is a testament to the depth of their roster. From the forwards to the midfielders to the defenders, the offensive threat that comes from Delaware can come from any position on the field. D'Appolonia, a senior, earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Honorable Mention honors. D'Appolonia is the Blue Hens returning leading scorer with a pair of goals in the shortened 2021 spring season for four points and a team-high 18 points in 2019. The trio of D'Appolonia, redshirt junior Anna Diffendal and senior Lizzie Weimer started every match for Delaware in the spring. Diffendal has scored nine points over the last two seasons.
"We've been fortunate to be able to create some depth across our midfield and attacking lines as well," said Barroqueiro. "We have a good rotation of players in those spots that can come into a game, use their soccer IQs to work together to create dangerous opportunities, and also have individual skill sets that allow them to break down defenders. We're athletic & dynamic in some key spots this year. I'm excited to see if we can translate that into goals."
