PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers scored a pair of first half goals as the Scarlet Knights defeated Delaware, 2-0, in both teams' season opener Thursday night at Yurcak Field.
Thomas DeVizio scored the first goal of the match in the 10th minute when he tapped home a short cross from the left side by Nico Rosamilia. In the 28th minute Jackson Temple converted a penalty kick, pushing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to make it a two-goal game.
The Blue Hens took seven of the game's 11 shots in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. Rutgers held a slim 13-11 shot advantage for the match, and enjoyed a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Carlos Fernandez and Zach Golden each took three shots for Delaware, while Pedro Barbolla and Tiago Santos added two apiece. Gonzalo Bartoli made four saves in the Blue Hen net during his first career UD appearance.
"We had some excellent passages of play tonight against very good Big Ten opposition in Rutgers, and the numbers will reflect that," said head coach Ian Hennessy. "I was very encouraged by our ability to imprint our style of play on the game. It was two very uncharacteristic errors that cost us, however I have great faith in this group. When we finally have a full squad to select from, I think we can be very competitive this year. I think these lads feel the same way. They are excited."
Delaware returns to action on Monday with a 7 p.m. contest at Seton Hall.
