UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 19 Delaware field hockey team (2-4) dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 9 Penn State (5-0) Sunday afternoon.Â
"We played our best Delaware hockey against the best team we have faced thus far this season," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof I am very proud of our team's performance and believe we have taken another step forward in our development and identity. We competed with a very good and disciplined No. 9 Penn State."
The game started off fast-paced from the pass back with both teams battling for possession in the midfield during the first quarter. Penn State's Anna Simon netted the first goal of the game with under four minutes remaining before halftime.
"It was clear today our team had decided to connect and stay connected with each other, resulting in a lot of very good clips for us to celebrate and learn from moving forward. The team bought into the changes we made to our line up and followed the game plan very well."
Six minutes into the third quarter, Penn State stretched its lead, 2-0, with a goal by Sophia Gladieux. The Nittany Lions scored their third and final goal of the game early in the fourth quarter on a corner by Mackenzie Allessie.
Goalkeeper Lizzie Gaebel recorded a season-high eight saves for Delaware, facing 21 shots, 11 of which were on goal. She faced 17 of those shots in the second half alone.Â
The Blue Hens took 11 shots, with Femke Strien leading the way with five. The Hens were edged in corners, 6-4, by the Nittany Lions.Â
"We want to be the best and are excited to play the best. In the coming days we plan on adding to our performance so we can take other steps forward when facing No. 13 Princeton and No. 8 Rutgers next weekend."
Delaware returns home to host Princeton in a night contest at 6 p.m. Friday.Â
