Delaware Falls in Five-Set Match to Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Delaware volleyball team battled back after falling in the opening two sets, but ultimately was defeated by Elon, 3-2, in a five-set CAA match on Saturday night.
It marked the fifth consecutive five-set match for the Blue Hens (5-7, 0-3 CAA) and the sixth all-time against the Phoenix (8-5, 3-0 CAA).
Savannah Seemans led the charge offensively for Delaware with a team-best 18 points. The sophomore outside hitter also tallied 14 digs for a double-double. Lani Mason notched a double-double as well, recording 14 kills and 13 digs. Kirah Johnson was the third Blue Hen to post double-digit kills as she had 11 to go along with a team-best five blocks.
Ezgi Basaranlar was the primary distributor and handed out a match-high 48 assists, while adding seven aces to her stat line. Katie Turner logged six helpers to pair with a match-best 24 digs.
SET ONE
Elon opened the first set on an 11-3 run. The Phoenix lead grew to as large as 10, 17-7, before the Blue Hens went on a 5-0 run and forced Elon to call timeout. Elon responded by outscoring Delaware, 8-3, en route to claiming the 25-15 set win.
SET TWO
Despite trailing 4-0 to start the second set, the Phoenix went on a 14-4 run to take the lead. A late 6-0 Delaware run put the Blue Hens on top by two, 20-18, but Elon countered with seven unanswered points to grab the 25-20 set victory. Â Â Â
SET THREE
After falling behind 5-4, the Blue Hens erupted for a 12-3 run. The Delaware lead grew as large as 11, 19-8, before Elon put up four straight points. The Phoenix trimmed the deficit to six, 21-15, but ultimately the Blue hens held on to earn the 25-17 win.
SET FOUR
Both sides traded points and neither team could gain much separation. Elon led 16-15, but a Mason kill sparked a 6-1 Delaware run to put the Blue Hens on top by six, 22-16. That run was the momentum that the Blue Hens needed as Delaware went on to secure the 25-20 set win.
SET FIVE
Delaware opened the final set on a 7-3 run. Elon made it a one-point game, 7-6, but the Blue Hens tallied four unanswered to extend their advantage. A 6-0 Elon run put the Phoenix up by one, 12-11. However, the two sides began to trade points and sat even at 15-15 before Elon scored back-to-back points to claim the 17-15 win.
