Men’s Tennis Has Strong Showing at Saint Joseph’s Fall Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Delaware men's tennis team participated in the Saint Joseph's Fall Invitational this weekend, with nine individuals and two doubles teams competing across multiple flights. Over the three days, the Blue Hens combined to win 17 matches and junior Liam Hedlund went 4-0 to claim the Flight 3 title.
Hedlund did not drop a set over his first two matches, defeating opponents from Drexel (7-5(6), 6-3) and Saint Joseph's (7-6(6), 6-1). He came from behind in his semifinal match to take down his NJIT foe by a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 score. In the finals, Hedlund again won by straight sets with a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over his opponent Morgan State.
James Wilkinson advanced to the finals of Flight 1, winning three matches over the first two days. He came back to defeat his first-round opponent 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-6 before easily beating his next two adversaries by scores of 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-2.
Luis Molina and Pascal Wagemaker were both also in Flight 1, and Molina claimed a first-round victory with a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) win over his opponent from Mary Washington. Wagemaker dropped his first match of the tournament, but bounced back to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.
In Flight 2, the Blue Hens had the top three seeds and saw first-round victories from Alexandre Gluck (6-2, 7-6(6)), Pierce Gilheany (6-4, 6-3) and Guilherme Valdoleiros (6-2, 6-2). Nicholas Gore (6-3, 6-4) also won a first-round match in Flight 3.
In doubles action, the duo of Gluck and Valdoleiros advanced to the finals of Flight 1 with a pair of victories and the team of Gore and Hedlund also won a match in Flight 2.
The Blue Hens will be back in action the weekend of October 14-17 when the squad travels to Annapolis, Maryland for the ITA Regionals.
