NEWARK, Del. - The No. 17 Delaware field hockey team shut out American, 2-0, Friday night and improved to 2-1 on the season.
CAA Preseason Player of the Year, Femke Strien, received a long pass from midfield into the striking circle before she put one into the back of the cage in the second period to give the Blue Hens the early 1-0 advantage.
Senior Grace Hoepfner then scored Delaware's second and final goal of the evening in the third period on a corner. Ashlyn Carr inserted the ball off the corner to Sarah Iannuzzi and the senior found Hoepfner for the goal to put Delaware up by two, 2-0.
Delaware was out shot by American, 10-12, but goalkeeper Lizzie Gaebel tallied seven saves for her second win of the season.Â
The Blue Hens host return to action on Sunday when they host Monmouth for a 1 p.m. tilt.Â
THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAN DE KERKHOF
"A beautiful evening for field hockey action at Rullo Stadium. Compliments to our team on finding a way to earn the win versus a good American. Our performance was inconsistent which is normal as part of the early season experience and growth. We will use today's learnings to help ourselves improving on both sides of the ball moving forward. I am excited for the team that we will face Monmouth on Sunday as it provides another opportunity soon to add to our knowledge and execution on both sides of the ball." -- Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
