NEWARK, Del. - The No. 17 Blue Hens (2-2) fell to Monmouth (3-1) Sunday afternoon, 3-2. Sophomore Julia Duffhuis scored twice in the loss.Â
The Hawks took an early lead, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the game.
Duffhuis answered back for Delaware, scoring on a corner with assists from Ashlyn Carr and Grace Miller. The first quarter ended with Monmouth holding a 3-1 lead.Â
In the second quarter, Duffhuis was able to score on the same play. She was assisted by Ashlyn Carr and Sarah Iannuzzi.Â
Delaware fought until the end and had a chance to tie the game with three corner opportunities in the last two minutes, but was unable to execute.Â
The second half went scoreless on both ends, with each team recording three shots apiece. Monmouth had a 9-6 advantage in corners.
The Blue Hens will remain in Newark, as they host Harvard on Friday for a 5 p.m. contest at Rullo Stadium.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAN DE KERKHOF
"A familiar scenario again for us today and one we have to learn from moving forward. Our first quarter was very poor and allowed Monmouth to go 3-0. We worked hard the rest of the game to come back but lacked the required discipline and team play to turn things around in our advantage. Time has come that we bring the fight, to perform in such a way that we dominate the opponent, and therefore the final score. This week we will make adjustments where needed to challenge and create more of the needed fight and discipline in order to prevent another Monmouth and Virginia game experience, performance and outcome. This team knows we need to be better and more consistent in order to realistically pursue our goals in the CAA come October and November." -- Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
