BOSTON – Delaware used a seven-point run in overtime to take the lead for good as the Blue Hens edged Northeastern, 82-76, Monday night at Matthews Arena.
Dylan Painter led UD with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Andrew Carr added 18 points on the night. Ebby Asamoah scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed eight boards, while Kevin Anderson contributed 13 points and nine assists.
The Blue Hens shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 9 of 18 from behind the arc.
Delaware trailed by a point midway through the extra session but then scored the next seven points, going up 79-73 on a Painter dunk with 1:40 on the clock. Following a Huskies three-pointer, Anderson found Nelson, Jr. for a layup to put UD up five with 36.6 seconds to play. Painter then added a free throw with 17 seconds left to close the scoring.
The Blue Hens used an early 11-point run to take a 14-3 advantage four and a half minutes into the contest and led the rest of the half. The Huskies closed within five late in the first half and were down six in the final minute, but Asamoah completed a four-point play to give Delaware a 39-29 cushion at the break.
The Blue Hens quickly extended the margin to 15 early in the second period, as a transition layup by Painter made it a 46-31 game with 18:15 remaining.
Delaware was still up 10 following a Carr layup, but the Huskies answered with a 9-1 run to close within 58-56 with 10:40 to play. Northeastern pulled even at 64-64 before Asamoah drilled a deep triple to put the Blue Hens back in front 67-64 at the 5:40 mark.
But Delaware then went scoreless for nearly five minutes, as Northeastern scored five straight points to go in front by two. Anderson answered with two free throws with 47 seconds on the clock, and after both teams missed three-point attempts, the game went to overtime tied 69-69.
Martin Ingelsby
"We did a really good job of staying poised down the stretch. We got a big lead, and after they made a run, we stayed together and got stops when we needed to. It says a lot about our character to gut out a win on the road. Kevin Anderson was fabulous and really distributed the basketball. I can't say enough about Ebby's development and production. I'm really proud to get to 3-2 in league play on the road. This was a really good effort for us."
