WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball built a double-digit cushion in the final quarter to roll past William & Mary (6-11, 1-5 CAA) with a 70-56 CAA road victory Friday evening inside Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va. With the win, the Blue Hens are 12-5 on the season and 6-1 in league play.
"Today was an example of being road tough, second of three," said head coach Natasha Adair. "We had big moments from people but we know this team, I know Ed, there is so much respect for his program and how prepared they are going to be. Sydney Wagner is a veteran in this league, she is a scorer and we knew that. Riley Casey same thing, we knew that those two make them go. This league is so competitive and every night you've got to be ready to compete. I thought we had big moments, Tyi Skinner, 19 points 5-of-10 from three, that is a career-high for her because she is fearless. I thought Ty Battle and Lizzie Oleary had some big moments down the stretch. When it was winning time, we made the winning plays and we kept stressing defense. I thought we were the tougher, most gritty team. You have to find ways to win and our team did, I am very proud of them."
It was a closely contested game for the opening 14:30, where both teams didn't lead any more than five points. With it being a 24-all game, at the 4:05 mark Tara Cousins connected from deep as part of Delaware scoring seven straight points to head into the break with the 31-24 lead.
Dani Mcteer's layup pulled the Tribe within four points with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Then Tyi Skinner knocked down back-to-back triples to kickstart an 8-2 Blue Hen run to extend the lead to 12 points, 48-36. William & Mary responded quickly with an 8-2 spurt of their own slice deficit to six, 52-46, heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter at the 3:26 mark, the Tribe couldn't close the gap any smaller than six points (62-56). The Blue Hens finished out the game with an 8-0 run to settle the 70-56 final.
Skinner finished with 19 points (5-of-10 3FG, career-high), three rebounds, two assists and a steal to lead Delaware to victory. Jasmine Dickey followed with 15 points and seven rebounds while Ty Battle poured in 13 points (6-of-10 FG), pulled down five rebounds and nabbed three steals.
Sydney Wagner led all scorers with 29 points (12-of-23 FG, 5-of-9 3FG) to go with seven rebounds to pace William & Mary. Kate Sramac grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Delaware shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free-throw line. William & Mary connected on 40.7 percent (24-59) from the field and 42.1 percent (8-19) from three-point territory. William & Mary held the rebound margin advantage (41-30) while scoring 12 second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds. Delaware outworked William & Mary in blocks (2-1), steals (10-3), fast break points (7-2) and bench points (8-2) while scoring 18 points off 18 Tribe miscues. William & Mary held the edge in assists (10-8) and points in the paint (22-20).
