NEWARK, Del. - Alonso Rodriguez scored a pair of goals for Delaware's men's soccer team, but the Blue Hens were defeated by UMBC, 4-2, on Oct. 11, 2022 at Grant Stadium. Charles Giordano also recorded his first career assist during the match.
UMBC's (7-4-1) Ryan Becher scored two goals early in the first half, the first on a penalty kick in the 18th minute and the second coming in the 19th minute to put the Retrievers up 2-0. Rodriguez scored his first goal of the night, and the season, after a cross redirected off a UMBC defender perfectly to the St. Mary's transfer and he was able to beat the Retriever keeper during the 44th minute.Â
Alonso got the Blue Hens started just 30 seconds into the second half after Giordano made a great pass in the box. Rodriguez was able to beat a defender and find the back of the net to tie the game at two. UMBC responded during the 61st and 64th minute, as Alek Wroblewski and Taylor Calheira both scored to put UMBC back up by two goals.Â
Rodriguez becomes the second Delaware player to score two goals in a game this season, as Sam Donnellan also scored two against George Washington on Sept. 13. The goals were Rodriguez's first as a Blue Hen, as he previously scored 13 with St. Mary's and 10 with Fort Hays State. Giordano also becomes the eighth different Delaware player with an assist this season, and the third freshman, joining Florian Phlepsen and Petros Fokas. Delaware took 14 shots and had seven shots on goal during the game, as compared to UMBC's 10 shots and five on goal. The Blue Hens also had five corner kicks compared to the Retrievers' four.Â
Delaware plays game three of their four-game homestand when they host Stony Brook at Grant Stadium on Oct. 15, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
