NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's men's soccer team defeated Stony Brook, 3-2, on Saturday for their first conference win of the season. The Blue Hens (3-8-2, 1-5-1) got two goals from freshman sensation Sam Donnellan and a goal and an assist from Orri Thorhallsson. Aron Adalsteinsson also recorded an assist during the game.Â
"Incredibly happy for the boys more than anything else," head coach Tommy McMenemy said. "They've worked so hard since we arrived and we all know this has been a long-time coming. I think it was a huge mental hurdle to get over and the manner in which we've done it was especially satisfying. The men on the field did their job, the guys that came in off the bench; they did their job and everything that was asked of them. We put 90 minutes together and they finally got the result that they deserved for the work that they've put in to this point. Really happy for the boys and really happy for the staff because we've all been pushing so hard for this."Â
Stony Brook (4-9-0, 2-5-0) struck first with a goal by Jonas Bickus in the second minute of action. The rest of the first half was played fairly evenly, but the Blue Hens were able to tie the game during the 42nd minute. Florian Phlepsen's corner kick was redirected by Adalsteinsson to Thorhallsson, and he was able to score the equalizer just before the half. This was Thorhallsson's fourth career goal, and his second in the last four games, while Adalsteinsson picked up his second assist of the season.
Delaware came out of the second half on fire, with Donnellan scoring his first goal of the game in the 48th minute. Thorhallsson's attempted shot was saved by the Seawolves' goalkeeper, but Donnellan was in the right place at the right time and gave the Blue Hens the lead with a strike to the back-left corner of the net. Shortly after, Donnellan extended the Blue Hen lead with a goal in the 55th minute, with Thorhallsson recording an assist. Thorhallsson split two defenders on a pass and found Donnellan in the box for his second goal of the night. Donnellan now has seven goals on the year, and two games of multiple goals (Sept. 13 against George Washington), while Thorhallsson recorded his third career assist and second career game with a goal and assist.Â
Stony Brook attempted a comeback with a goal by Bickus, his second of the game, during the 70th minute. However, the Blue Hens were able to hang out for the final 20 minutes and clinch the victory. Delaware attempted 19 shots in the game, and 10 corner kicks, as compared to nine shots by Stony Brook and three corner kicks. Donnellan's seven goals this season are the most by a Delaware freshman since Fede Prieto also had seven in 2016. Donnellan is also the fastest Delaware player to score seven career goals, reaching it in his 13th career game, since former All-American Guillermo Delgado reached the mark in his first five career games in 2013. Donnellan became the first Delaware freshman with multiple games of at least two goals since Delgado in 2013 as well, who did it on three occasions. With his two goals tonight, he moved into a three-way tie for second most in the conference with seven total. The three goals scored by Delaware mark a new season-high.
Delaware wraps up their four-game homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against American for Senior Day.Â
