NEWARK, DEL. – Delaware field hockey (6-10, 4-1 CAA) picked up its fourth straight Colonial Athletic Association win against Northeastern (3-12, 2-2 CAA) 3-2 in a thrilling overtime shootout on Friday.
"A great win in dramatic fashion for our team tonight as part of Delaware field hockey's family weekend," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said.
With the win, the Blue Hens even the overall series to 17-17, and extend their win streak to 12 games against the Huskies.
In the first quarter, NU got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first two goals, including a goal off a penalty corner.
In the third minute of the third quarter, the Blue Hens got on the board with a goal from Berber Bakermans. Ashlyn Carr received a pass from Kiki Oudshoorn to the right of the net. Carr pass the ball to Bakermans in the middle of the attacking circle and poked the ball to the back of the net. It was Bakermans' third goal of the season and Oudshoorn's fifth assist.
With less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter, Julia Duffhuis tied the game with a goal off a penalty corner. Bakermans' received the inserted pass from Carr to set up Duffhuis' shot, which went past the diving goalkeeper to the lower right part of the net. The goal was Duffhuis' team-leading seventh goal of the season. Carr earned her sixth and seventh assist of the season. Bakermans earned her fifth assist of the season.
After 20 minutes of scoreless overtime play, the game went to a shootout. With the shootout tied at 2-2, Kiki Oudshoorn iced the game for the Blue Hens after striking the ball past an unbalanced Huskies goalkeeper.
"This team is getting better with each CAA game played. All throughout the season we have faced many different game scenarios and added a double OT and shootout today. I am very proud of our team for fighting themselves back after looking at a 2-0 deficit at the conclusion of the first quarter and turning on the heat in the third and fourth quarters and both OT periods. It is a joy to see our players becoming more confident in themselves and with each other and in their ability to play together and stay the course. In addition to locking in a ticket for the CAA Conference Tournament, this win will also allow the Blue Hens to compete for at least a share of the CAA Regular Season Championship versus Hofstra on Sunday," van de Kerhof said.
On the day, the Blue Hens outshot the Huskies 22-15. Nineteen of the Blue Hens' 22 shots came in the second half and overtime. The Huskies had seven penalty corners to the Blue Hens' four.
The Blue Hens wrap up conference play with a game against Hofstra on Sunday, Oct. 23. At Sunday's game, the Blue Hens celebrate seniors Ashlyn Carr and Morgan Rigual. In addition, the Blue Hens name Ned Davis an honorary coach. Davis was a groundskeeper for the University of Delaware for over two decades.
