Volleyball Tangles With Hofstra
10/23/2022 3:41:00 PM | Volleyball
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a 3-1 CAA road decision (20-25, 25-21, 14-25, 23-25) to Hofstra (15-8, 12-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside David S. Mack Physical Education Center. With two more CAA regular-season series left to play, Delaware (11-9, 7-5 CAA) is currently sitting in fifth place in league standings.
Delaware finished the afternoon attacking at a rate of .130 compared to Hofstra's .261. The Blue Hens led the way in aces (8-6) while the Pride held the edge in points (65-53), kills (50-46), assists (48-45) and digs (47-44). Both teams sent away nine attempts apiece.
After dropping set one, Delaware refused to fall down two sets again. The Blue Hens opened the set with a 4-1 run that was capped by Lani Mason's kill. Both teams put together a series of runs to regain the advantage. With the scoreboard showing 15-all, Delaware used a much-needed 8-1 run which was closed out by Kirah Johnson and Lauryn Richardson teaming up to send Izadora Stedile's attempt away, 23-16. Hofstra answered back with a 5-1 spurt to pull within three points, 24-21, before Mason left no doubt in the gym when she nailed down Lily Rogers' feed to capture the 25-21 set two win.
Hofstra dominated the third set and walked away easy with the 25-14 victory. With their backs against the wall, Delaware was determined to push the match to a fifth set. The seesaw battle commenced as the set saw four lead changes and six ties. Once the set was all tied up at 20, the Pride scored three unanswered points, 23-20. A fire was sparked by Savannah Seemans as she responded by having her hands all over the Blue Hens' next three points, which was capped beautifully by one of her three aces (23-23). Delaware's late rally came up short as Hofstra scored the match's final two points to secure their 12-straight win.
Seemans paced Delaware with a season-high 15 kills to go along with nine digs and three aces. Mason followed with nine kills and 10 digs, stopping her double-digit kill streak at 19 matches. Rogers and Ezgi Basaranlar directed the Blue Hen offense with 21 kills apiece. Johnson stood tall for Delaware and sent away six attempts.
Stedile led the way for Hofstra with 13 kills while Zyare Abdul-Rahim (four block assists) chipped in 11 kills. Beatriz Alves dished out 43 assists while Chiara Cucco scooped up 21 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will return back to campus briefly and will play host to UNCW for a CAA two-match weekend series (Oct. 29-30). Both matches are slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
