NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team forced their sixth five-set match this season Sunday afternoon and came up short (19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-22, 12-15) against UNCW (4-17, 2-10 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside Bob Carpenter Center. The heartbreaking loss moves the Blue Hens to a 12-10 record on the season and an 8-6 mark in league play.
After the match, the Blue Hen senior class of Leanna Deegan and Eileen Gex were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to the University of Delaware volleyball program.
Delaware's finest attacking set was in the fourth, hitting at a .278 clip, to finish the afternoon .141 compared to UNCW's .180. The Blue Hens held the advantage in kills (59-52), assists (57-45 and digs (85-64) while the Seahawks held the edge in points (74-69), aces (10-7) and blocks (12-3).
Although UNCW took the 25-19 set one victory, the Blue Hens shining moment of the set came when Lani Mason reached her 1,000th career kill. Mason just needed four kills to reach the milestone and was done beautifully after she connected with Ezgi Basaranlar to add her name to the program's record books. Mason became the 20th Blue Hen to reach the milestone and currently sits in 19th place with 1,023 career kills.
The Seahawks took the two sets to one lead after claiming the 25-18 set three win. The Blue Hens determined to push to five in set four by opening with an 8-3 spurt capped by Basaranlar's ace. Delaware held the lead for most of the set before UNCW clawed their way back with a 6-2 run to pull within two, 24-22. Then, Basaranlar set Mason up effortlessly to put set four in the Blue Hens' win colum, 25-22.
Tied two sets apiece, UNCW went on a 5-2 run in the deciding set. The Blue Hens capitalized on an attacking error to kickstart a much needed 8-3 run which was closed out by Lauryn Richardson's kill, 10-8. Katie Lanz's back-to-back kills for the Seahawks made it a 10-all game. Savannah Seemans and Mason both put away Basranlar's dish to give Delaware some breathing room, 12-10. UNCW then went into the driver's seat, scoring five unanswered points to secure the five-set victory, 15-12.
Mason led the way with 27 kills and 13 digs to post her 12th double-double on the season for Delaware. Richardson followed with nine kills. Basaranlar directed the Blue Hen offense with 48 assists and scooped up 10 digs to register her second double-double of the season. Gex anchored the Blue Hen defense by surpassing her previous career-high mark she just set yesterday with 29 digs. Seemans and Amelia Painter supported Gex in the back row with 17 and 10 digs, respectively. Mason stood tall with Augier and sent away three attempts each.
Lanz finished with 11 kills and 11 digs in UNCW's win. Annabell Schall (five aces) and Noe Gaeta dished out 20 and 18 assists, respectively. Ashley Thompson and Sarah Thompson had 19 and 13 digs, respectively, while Caitly Callahan chipped in eight blocks.
