Ojo's Career Evening Leads Women’s Basketball Past VCU, 63-50
11/15/2022 9:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team defended their home court Tuesday evening when they welcomed former conference foe VCU. The Blue Hens (2-1) captured the 63-50 victory over the Rams (1-2) in front of the 1,016 adoring fans inside Bob Carpenter Center.
"I am really proud of how hard the team played and their effort tonight," said head coach Sarah Jenkins. "We talked about how our defense was going to translate into our offense and they executed what we have been working on. I challenged them to get better and they rose to the occasion. Now, we shift our focus to Vermont on Friday."
Jewel Smalls opened the game's scoring with a layup six seconds in to ignite the 6-2 Delaware run. The tightly contested game commenced as the Blue Hens held the narrow edge for the remainder of the quarter, even when VCU knotted the game twice, 14-14. With 43 seconds left, Michelle Ojo laid in two to give Delaware the 16-14 lead.
Delaware turned up the intensity in the second quarter as Kharis Idom knocked down a jumper to kickstart the 16-4 run that lasted 5:39 to extend the lead to double-digits, 34-18. VCU scored four of the remaining six points of the quarter, which was capped by Chloe Bloom's layup, to send the 36-24 game into the break.
The Blue Hens remained in the driver's seat to start the third. Makayla Pippin laid in two as part of the Blue Hens' 10-0 run, which was highlighted by Idom scoring five-straight points, for the lead to balloon to 24 points, 48-24, Delaware's largest of the night. VCU put together a 10-6 run of their own which was closed out by Janika Griffith-Wallace's layup to trim the deficit to 18 points (54-36) and head into the final 10 minutes of play.
VCU clawed their way back into the game using a 14-4 run to close the gap to eight points, 58-50 with 2:19 remaining. Pippin and Idom scored to stop the bleeding, then Nakiyah Mays-Prince iced the game with two free throws to seal Delaware's first home victory.
Ojo finished with career bests of 15 points (6-11 FG, 3-4 FT) and 10 rebounds to post her first-career double-double, leading Delaware to its second win of the season. Tara Cousins followed with a season-best 15 points (6-11 FG) while Idom scored 10 points on an efficient 4-of-7 shooting with a made three-pointer.
Bloom paced VCU with 11 points and seven rebounds.
In the end, Delaware finished the evening shooting 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-12) from beyond the arc, and 75.0 percent (6-8) from the free-throw line. VCU connected on 30.0 percent (18-60) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-14) from three-point territory, and outplayed the Rams in assists (7-4), blocks (7-2), and points in the paint (30-23).
