NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware baseball team opens its season with a trip to Oxford, Miss. and is slated to play 28 games at Bob Hannah Stadium as the Blue Hens announce their 2023 schedule.Â
Â
"We have had a great fall preparing for the upcoming 2023 season which features 55 regular season, 30 CAA, and 28 home games," said first-year head coach Greg Mamula.
Â
Delaware kicks off its season with a three-game set against the defending national champion University of Mississippi at Swayze Field on Feb. 17-19. This is the fifth time in UD's program history playing a defending national champion, and the first since taking on Cal St. Fullerton in NCAA Regionals in 1996. The Blue Hens return to the First State for their single-game home opener versus UMBC on Feb. 21 at 3 p.m., before traveling to the Sunshine State that weekend to face Stetson in a three-game series.Â
Â
"We open the season against defending national champion Ole Miss in Oxford. Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco is regarded throughout college baseball as one of the top coaches," said Mamula. "His father Ron grew up in Wilmington, attended Conrad HS and played both baseball (catcher for Tubby Raymond) and football (defensive back for David Nelson) at UD in the 1960s. This series came about as a result of the Bianco's connection to UD. Needless to say, we are excited for the opportunity to play this series."
Â
Following a road game at Maryland on Feb. 28, UD opens a 12-game homestand when the Blue Hens welcome Rider to Hannah Stadium on Mar. 3-5 and George Washington on Mar. 7. The Blue and Gold begin conference play vs. defending CAA champion Hofstra (Mar. 10-12), and host Maryland (Mar. 14), UMass Lowell (Mar. 17-19), and Delaware State (Mar. 21) to close out the homestand.Â
Â
UD heads to North Carolina to face CAA opponent Elon on Mar. 24-26, before returning home to open the Liberty Bell Classic against Saint Joseph's on Mar. 28 and play College of Charleston Mar. 31 - Apr. 2. The second round of the LBC is scheduled for Apr. 4 against Penn or Lafayette.Â
Â
The Blue Hens play a three-game series at Northeastern on Apr. 7-9, before going back out of conference to take on Saint Joseph's at home (Apr. 11), George Washington in Arlington, Va. (Apr. 12), and North Carolina A&T at Bob Hannah Stadium (Apr. 14-16).
Â
UD heads down Route 1 to start an eight-game road trip against Delaware State (Apr. 18), before facing UNCW (Apr. 21-23), Saint Joseph's (Apr. 25), and William and Mary (Apr. 28-30).Â
Â
To open up the month of May, Delaware hosts CAA newcomer Stony Brook (May 5-7) and travels to Philadelphia to face Penn (May 10). The Blue and Gold's final homestand is against Towson (May 12-14), as they end their regular season on the road at UMBC (May 16) and at Monmouth (May 18-20).Â
Â
The six-team CAA Tournament will be held May 24-28 at Elon's University's Latham Park.
Â
"Of the 31 Div. I baseball conferences, the CAA finished with the 12th best conference RPI in 2022 and, with the recent/upcoming additions to the conference, the CAA is moving towards becoming a potential NCAA Tournament multiple bid league," remarked Mamula. "We look forward to competing for a CAA championship this spring."
