NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware field hockey team completed its 51st season in the fall of 2022.
The Blue Hens fought through adversity to win a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship, a conference tournament championship and defeated Lehigh 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Strong Schedule
Head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof put together a tough schedule that consisted of nine ranked opponents. Of those nine ranked opponents, eight of them were nonconference foes.
Second Half Push
After dropping their conference opener to Monmouth, the Blue Hens won their final five conference games to win a share of the CAA regular season championship. The key to the Blue Hens' success was putting together a strong performance for all 60 minutes, with most of their success coming from the second half. Of the 16 goals they scored in the five-game stretch, 11 of them came in the second half.
The Blue Hens used their momentum from the regular season to put together two dominant performances in the CAA Tournament, defeating Northeastern in the semifinals 6-1, and Drexel in the championship game 6-1 at Rullo Stadium.
With a CAA Tournament Championship under their belt, the Blue Hens traveled to Chapel Hill, N.C., and defeated Lehigh 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Hens' season concluded with a loss against the eventual National Champions North Carolina. The Blue Hens finished with a 10-12 overall record and a 5-1 record in conference.
Individual Highlights
Julia Duffhuis led the Blue Hens in goals with 14 and added four assists. She scored a goal in six of her last seven games, including her first career hat trick against Northeastern in the CAA semifinals.
Berber Bakermans and Ashlyn Carr registered 10+ assists on the season. They both had four goals each.
Bakermans led the Blue Hens in assists with 17. She either scored a goal or registered an assist in each of her final seven games. In the seven-game stretch, Bakermans recorded 13 assists, including three games with three assists.
Carr had 14 assists on the season. She registered an assist in seven of her final eight games of the season, including three assists against Northeastern in the CAA semifinals. She collected 10 assists in the eight-game stretch.
First Year Contributions
The Blue Hens had a number of freshmen contributions on the season. Noelle Sabbagh finished second on the team in goals with seven. Lia Becker finished fourth on the team in assists with seven and added four goals. On the defensive end, Cameron Medinger appeared and started in all 22 games.
CAA & Postseason Accolades
The Blue Hens received several accolades throughout the season.
Sabbagh and Izzy Rothwell each received CAA Freshman of the week honors. Sabbagh earned the honor twice back on Sept. 12 and Oct. 10. Rothwell received the honor on Oct. 24.
Bakermans was awarded CAA Co-Player of the Week back on Oct. 24.
Duffhuis was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row. Duffhuis, Carr, and Bakermans were named to the All-CAA First team, Sabbagh and Becker were named to the All-Freshman team.
In addition, Duffhuis and Carr were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic First Team, and Bakermans and Kiki Oudshoorn were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Second Team.
